In the presidential election of 1796, Adams, on the ticket of the Federalist Party, defeated the Democratic-Republican nominee Thomas Jefferson and became the second President of the United States. Adams signed legislation against aliens and critics of himself known as the Alien and Sedition Acts, which is considered one of the most unconstitutional bills ever enacted. Īdams was a big supporter of law and order, to the point of even defending the British soldiers who shot protesters at the Boston Massacre. Adams changed the spelling of Jefferson's elegant "inalienable" rights to a disfavored "unalienable" rights, leaving that clumsy spelling in the most famous sentence in the English language.
